I looked into some common themes in the 3 Shakespeare texts I’m considering in terms of their poster art, and these were the results:

Common things that come up in illustrations of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”:

  • Donkeys (Nick Bottom)
  • Fairies (in particular Puck or Titania)
  • Moons and night time
  • Floral patterns (flowers, trees, forests)

Common things that come up in illustrations of “Macbeth”:

  • Skulls
  • Daggers
  • Crowns
  • Blood (particularly on hands, bloody handprints – Lady Macbeth)
  • Witches

Common things that come up in illustrations of “Romeo and Juliet”:

  • Roses
  • Hearts (both broken and unbroken)
  • Daggers
  • Couples (sometimes represented with wedding rings)
  • Graves and other symbols of death
  • Blood splatters and bloodied objects
